The word “Prawirotomo” combines “prawiro” and “tomo”. In the Kawi – Sanskrit language, “prawiro” means a brave officer or soldier, while “tomo” means clever or wise. Every Prawirotomo soldier was expected to be a brave and clever warrior, to be wise in the ways of battle.

The descendants of the Prawirotomo continued to reside in the Prawirotaman Kampong. True to its name, the village played a big role in Yogyakarta as a military camp that housed the military forces fighting for independence during the 1940s. In the post-independence period, the village became known in the 1950s – 1960s as a center of the batik industry – managed by the descendants of the Prawirotomo. Since the 1970s, as the batik industry began to decline, the descendants of the Prawirotomo seamlessly shifted into providing lodgings to travelers and Prawirotaman became known as a tourist village.
